Braid is now available in the Ubuntu Software Center.
Linux users have been asking for a while; here it is:
http://apt.ubuntu.com/p/braid
Thanks to Jonathan Beilin for doing the necessary legwork for the game to go up there (and of course to Ryan C Gordon for doing the port).
Edit by Jonathan Beilin:
Ubuntu 11.10 notes: please ensure that you are using drivers that enable 3D acceleration. This may involve using the ‘additional’ (proprietary) drivers listed in the ‘System’ pane. Set your volume before you start the game – you may not be able to use volume hotkeys on your keyboard to adjust the volume once the game is active. You may see a black window while the game is starting. The first launch is the longest.
We’ve seen some reports of problems with the audio. We’re investigating the root of the problem; in the mean time, check out these posts in the forums:
Also of note is a list of command line switches.
Plus a word from Ryan Gordon: “If you get bad sound, try export SDL_AUDIODRIVER=alsa, and that’ll probably solve 90% of the problem cases (but if it’s working now and you try this, it may stop working).”

Thank you!
I was looking today for the game in linux since I was late for the humble indie bundle.

Hi Jonathan,
Can you please explain what this means? Can people with Ubuntu install Braid for free?
Cheers,
Chris

Any chance of the deb package appearing on our HIB2 pages? It seems like a more comfortable way to install it.
And also – congratulations. It’s great to see this in USC.

Words cannot describe how bad-ass this is.
Redditing the hell out of it…
June 7th, 2011 at 3:56 pm
Glad to see Braid for Linux being spread. I got it for linux via the Indy Bundle and I’ve played the crap out of it.
(Also: way to go JB!)

Perhaps make the link above clickable, then you’ve got the easiest way to install it possible.

Hello,
I recently wrote an article about ‘Braid’ on my website as it is now available in Ubuntu Software Center. One of our readers has purchased the game but sound is not working for him.
It would be great if someone can look into this.

YES! This really is great! I hope this means that you will also release The Witness on linux too.
June 8th, 2011 at 7:04 am
Can you update the Humble Bundle version of Braid, please?

+++++
great!

Just bought this game from Ubuntu Software Center. Odd thing: can only play if the Terminal is open. No, I’m not running the game from the Terminal, just leaving it open, otherwise, the screen goes black and I can only hear the sounds.
My specs:
Screen Size: 14″ HD LED Glare, 16:09
HD: 320GB (SATA 5400rpm)
Resolution: 1366 x 768
OS: Ubuntu Natty 64bits
Processor: Intel Core i5 460M (3M – 2.53 GHZ)
Memory: 4GB DDR3 (1066)
Video Board: Intel GMA HD (integrated)
Here is the thread at Ubuntu Forums:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1778103&goto=newpost
Great game, BTW.
June 10th, 2011 at 3:18 am
I for one think this is awesome.
June 10th, 2011 at 6:20 am
I cant get this to install under 10.04 32-bit: “Could not find package braid” when using the URL above and apturl.
Kind regards,
Iestyn
June 10th, 2011 at 9:11 am
Thank you so much for getting it published in the software center. I bought it immediately.
I must admit that although the game worked well and had no crashing issues there remained a large problem with correct resolutions. My Intel i915 graphics chip and Nvidia Geforce (with proprietary drivers) on Ubuntu 11.04 were both having issues. Two computers but both instances had some bizarre resolution set with the option to adjust greyed out in the menu. I eventually found online the arguments I could pass via commandline.
Is there a bug tracker that I should be reporting this to?
June 10th, 2011 at 8:34 pm
Hey, I purchased Braid through the Ubuntu store, and while it works, I do not get any sound. What I can do to help you debug this? (And get sound working for me?)
June 12th, 2011 at 8:08 am
Amazing game! Definitely the best the Ubuntu application center currently has to offer. Thanks a lot for supporting Linux
June 14th, 2011 at 8:42 am
Fantastic game! You are genius! Thanks for Linux port.
June 14th, 2011 at 3:05 pm
@Iestyn
You need Maverick for a compatible version of the USC.
June 15th, 2011 at 1:35 am
I took at look at Braid Software Center on Ubuntu 10.10.
Apparently there’s no screenshot available for it. I think having a screenshot on the page would encourage more people to buy the game, given they’ll have a better idea of what it’s about and also see how visually stunning it is.
June 15th, 2011 at 5:44 am
Is there any chance to see Braid on other Linux distributions ? Like ArchLinux ?
June 17th, 2011 at 5:06 am
I would also like to know if there will be a distribution-independent Linux release we can purchase. But as a Desura client for Linux is on it’s way Braid will be available there I guess..?!
June 18th, 2011 at 8:49 am
I also purchased through Ubuntu software centre and have no sound (11.04, 64 Bit). Machine is a Thinkpad x120e, would be great if I can get this working. Any help appreciated.
June 20th, 2011 at 10:05 am
@Sofox – The lack of a screenshot on 10.10 is a bug on Ubuntu’s end. 11.04 and later will display a screenshot.
@Silejonu – Keep your eyes peeled. We’re working on a solution for other platforms.
June 20th, 2011 at 5:43 pm
Thank you! A thousand times, thank you.
June 25th, 2011 at 10:12 pm
Is it possible to install Braid on Debian?
June 27th, 2011 at 9:21 am
When I sought to buy this game initially I looked for a Linux version, didn’t find one, and opted to buy it for Xbox. This was a very stellar game and all I could think of while playing was “damn these guys are smart as hell” (developers / producers / designers, etc).
I will be recommending this game to friends, but I wish the Linux version was out at launch. Better late than never, I really hope the Linux edition is a success.
Respect
June 27th, 2011 at 9:51 am
@Debianist – we’ll be offering the game for other linux distributions soon.
July 1st, 2011 at 4:05 pm
\o/
Finally, I can buy the GNU/Linux version of the game after having missed the HIB2!
I never understood why this was impossible since the port was already there. Aquaria and Cortex command have the same problem: No way to get the GNU/Linux version from the official websites or anywhere else (legally).
I still haven’t bought anything through the USC, since I tend to trust my browser more for money stuff, but I guess I might try it this time.
And hopefully, it will be possible to buy a distro-independent version per browser (or in shops!) soon.
July 4th, 2011 at 4:44 am
What are the system requirements? It sounds interesting, but I know a lot of games won’t work with intel graphics on Linux, and I’d rather not find I can’t play it only *after* spending money on it.
July 5th, 2011 at 2:14 am
@jbeilin – That’s great!! I’ve been trying everything to have Braid on my Debian (including trying to compile USC ^_^). Superb!!
July 5th, 2011 at 7:29 pm
Hi
I found linux launcher for Braid
http://www.atarixel.republika.pl/braidlauncher_alpha.tar.gz
July 18th, 2011 at 3:19 am
I bought the Ubuntu version through the USC and it locks up my PC on a black screen when I open it. Haven’t found any way out other than to power-cycle.
PC is a Dell Optiplex 330 (Intel Core2 Duo E4500 @ 2.20GHz), 2GB RAM. Using onboard graphics at 1920×1080 (normal), 1024×768 and 800×600 – makes no difference.
July 18th, 2011 at 5:38 am
Update: tried running from Terminal:
i915_program_error: Exceeded max nr indirect texture lookups (8 out of 4)
i915_program_error: Exceeded max nr indirect texture lookups (8 out of 4)
i915_program_error: Exceeded max ALU instructions (83 out of 64)
Got a spare NVidia card; will load that up and try again ..
July 18th, 2011 at 9:29 am
Changing video card to an ATI RV710 (Radeon HD4350) solved the problem.
July 19th, 2011 at 10:57 pm
Thank you!
The game was awesome and worked perfectly in Ubuntu 11.04.

Running Braid on Linux Mint / Ubuntu / Debian AMD64 (64-bit) doesn’t work without “libc6-i386″ package
It took me a while to figure this out and since its not documented anywhere, I figured I would spam it onto here, basically the Braid installer will fail to run on AMD64 without the i386 libc6 compatibility libraries installed, this was not obvious to me and took about 45 minutes to get sorted out. Hopefully, this can help those who couldn’t make it past the problem on their own.
Cheers,
-G
# chmod a+x braid-linux-build2.run.bin
# ./braid-linux-build2.run.bin
-bash: ./braid-linux-build2.run.bin: No such file or directory
# file ./braid-linux-build2.run.bin

## ldd does not work on 32-bit binaries when running on a 64-bit system
# strings ./braid-linux-build2.run.bin | grep lib

sudo ./braid-linux-build2.run.bin # run as root to install in /usr/local/games or another path outside home directory for multi-user systems.

Great ! Got it
Thanks for supporting Linux !
Working perfectly (ubuntu 11.04, nvidia board).
Considering drivers quality is very variable, a demo version would be useful
August 16th, 2011 at 8:52 pm
I got this as part of the humble bundle and have really been enjoying it.
I did have some issues with audio – I am not sure where to report it but here are my findings.
I am running Kubuntu Natty Narwal.
Sound is going to my firewire soundcard via pulse-audio and then jack. Sound was slightly choppy through most of the game and extremely bad when manipulating the puzzle pieces (something in that code is a latency killer). I have since upgraded to a low-latency version of the kernel (3.0.0-8-lowlatency) and the situation has very much improved. Hope that helps

Hi Jonathan,
I just wanted to let you know about Gameolith a gamestore only for Linux. If you publish Braid there it will let people running distribiutions other than Ubuntu play it.
You can read about their terms of agreement here:

October 1st, 2011 at 11:10 pm
Wait… does this mean braid is free for unbuntu?!
October 10th, 2011 at 12:13 pm
There are paid downloads in the Ubuntu Software Center. The price is the same there as anywhere else.
June 9th, 2012 at 10:23 am
I cannot get this working on ubuntu even though it works fine on the same computers with windows, I am just not going to boot into windows to play braid as I rarely use it. It installs and when I run it nothing happens.
June 14th, 2012 at 11:42 pm
Anyone know if it this will run on Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid ? it’s LTS so I’m waiting fore next point release of 12.04 to upgrade (as per Ubuntu recommendation). The software center in 10.04 does not include it, can I purchase and download from elsewhere ?
