Linux version of Braid
There’s a Linux version of Braid now; it’s available in the Humble Indie Bundle 2. Pay whatever you want for 5 games that all run on Windows, MacOS and Linux; pay more than the average and get 10 games! A big chunk of the money goes to charity (and you can choose what goes where!)
There’s only one day left in this promotion, so if it sounds interesting, head on over to the Humble Indie Bundle 2…
Thanks to Ryan C. Gordon for doing the Linux port!

Nice! This makes the third time I’ve paid for Braid (though only once at full price), glad to finally get it for Linux.
December 24th, 2010 at 11:51 am
Awesome!
Will it be available on its own, too? (or if you already bought it on Steam?)

The linux version has trouble if you try to play with dual monitors. A nice fix that Puppy Games has done for Revenge of the Titans is allowing passing a width, height, and starting x and starting y location for fullscreen play. Any chance we can see this implemented?

Congratulations on the Linux version!
A friend gifted me the Humble Bundle 2 for Christmas! Just finished DLing Braid and it has been a joy to play!
I want to upload a screenie and recommend this beautiful game to my friends. Though I need help with taking Braid screen caps. I just get a black screen whenever I try to hit PrintScreen on my keyboard. Help?

Man, I missed this by about 20 minutes. I didn’t realize HB2 was ending! Any word on when the Linux version will be available as a standalone download?
Thanks!

Thanks a million for the Linux version! Just got it for Christmas from a friend
Also, you were right about the walkthroughs. I got stuck in two levels and checked for a hint and when I got it felt terribly stupid and rotten. In fact, I think I’ll have to stop playing Braid for a few days, to forget about that incident, because it’s gnawing on me all the time when I play XD
Hereby I swear I will never check out walkthroughs and cheats anymore! Sometimes maybe after I finish it, just to see if there’s hidden jems — but even in that case only very rarely.
Oh, before I forget: I heard a few people complain that on Linux with an older Intel graphic card, they cannot play Braid. It works for me on my Intel GM45, but it’s worth checking out!

Since it is now over – where will be selling the Linux version?
December 27th, 2010 at 2:12 pm
Thank you so much for finally releasing a Linux port of Braid!
December 28th, 2010 at 6:21 am
I always get a black screen after start Braid. There is no error message except “socket(): Address family not supported by protocol”. I have tried options: -windowed, -half, -no_post, -language, -no_music, -vsync with no positive result. After several seconds Braid exits.
I have got a Nvidia FX 5700LE card with Nvidia binary drivers 173.14.28, xserver 1.7.7. I do not know what to do in order to play Braid.

Awesome game…just got the HiB. Know what would make it even better? .deb/.rpm packages. Maybe once you start selling the Linux version on its own? I hope you look into the Ubuntu Software Center as an option, in addition to your existing distribution.
December 29th, 2010 at 12:59 am
Thanks a lot for the Linux version ! Works like a charm !
You should *definitely* ask to include it in the Ubuntu Software Center and sell it outside of the bundle. (with a demo so that people check if their hardware supports it)
It’s great. There are people, like me, who do not use Windows nor any other gaming system and who are delighted to pay for great indie games
December 29th, 2010 at 8:51 pm
Doh! Just saw that I missed this. Looking forward to a chance to buy the Linux version.
December 30th, 2010 at 5:20 am
Thank you so much for porting it to Linux and including it in the Humble Bundle. I’d wanted to play it for a long time. My wife got me the HB#2 for Christmas, and I have only good things to say about Braid (although I’m ashamed to say that I cheated for two puzzle pieces, and wish I hadn’t).

Thank you for porting it to linux

I bought my humble pack 2 and i’m VERY VERY happy to have. In fact, i bought it because the games are linux native. And i’m more happy to see the average linux user paid more for them than the windows user.
Waiting for the next pack because i’ll get it with no doubt. Thanks!

It’s beautiful. Bought HIB2 to play it. Thank you!!!

Can you make graphical launcher for Braid?
January 8th, 2011 at 4:29 pm
The humble bundle is gone and I was unable to buy it on time. Is there a way to buy the linux version? Thanks!
January 8th, 2011 at 10:45 pm
After start braid I get only black screen with mouse pointer. There is no error message except “socket(): Address family not supported by protocol”. After several seconds braid exits. I have tried -windowed, -half, -no_post, -no_music, -fpsXX, -width, -height, -vsync options with no positive result.
Debian testing.
Nvidia GeForce FX 5700LE 173.14.28
xserver xorg 1.7.7
Do you have any ideas how to run braid?
January 12th, 2011 at 1:49 pm
@MrBogus
“Debian testing. Nvidia GeForce FX 5700LE 173.14.28″
Braid for Linux does not work with Geforce FX 5200 too.
January 12th, 2011 at 2:15 pm
Humble Bundle, namely Braid for Linux, was perfect timing.
It’s been a bit over two years since I first played Braid (first Xbox LIVE Arcade game I ever dropped money on) and was reminiscing just how much I missed the game.
It came out of no where, filled its own magical universe, and ended. Thanks for it. I haven’t played a game on par since. More games need to let less be more by allowing our minds to simply wander in the space, wanting more.

Have you tried installing the proprietary nVidia drivers? I think in Debian Squeeze you can use the ‘sgfxi’ tool for an automated install (otherwise you have to manually install the drivers, block the free drivers from loading, load the proprietary drivers module on boot, etc). After that, check if you have direct rendering with ‘glxinfo|grep direct’. On top of that, it may be that you have S3 texture compression (S3TC for short) disabled, you can use the ‘driconf’ utility to enable it, if I’m not mistaken.
MrBogus, that is a network connection error, it could be due to an outdated client trying to connect to an IPv6 address, for instance, or a hundred other things. I have no idea why Braid gives it, since it shouldn’t be establishing any connection to any server at all, it should run perfectly off-line (and does so in my computer).
January 22nd, 2011 at 12:51 pm
It doesn’t work in my GeForce FX 5500 , but i’m glad to know there are more and more great games for Linux.
January 25th, 2011 at 9:23 am
Hello, it’s been a great fun playing Braid on Linux, thanks for porting this masterpiece! I have two technical questions. which tool did you use to make the Linux Braid installer? That was slick! And how did you fool the system to use the shared libraries you have sent with the game, instead of searching them at /usr/local/lib?
January 31st, 2011 at 7:57 pm
Please bring Braid to Sony’s NGP system. I think Braid would be a great NGP game.
February 3rd, 2011 at 3:31 am
I just want a standalone for Linux! I missed the HIB2.
February 13th, 2011 at 12:02 am
I have a GeForce FX5700VE with the official nVidia drivers.
The Braid Linux version doesn’t even start but the Braid Windows versions under Wine is quite playable.
Paradoxical, isn’t it?
February 15th, 2011 at 10:04 am
I have to revoke my prior statement. Braid does indeed work with a NVS 140M on ubuntu 10.10. An updated version of braid from the humble bundle page did the trick.
February 16th, 2011 at 9:37 am
Thank you so much for the linux version
February 25th, 2011 at 7:19 pm
I too missed the HIB2… any chance of buying the Linux version? Looked around, couldn’t find anything…
March 7th, 2011 at 3:49 am
Hey,
I’m also searching for the linux version…. Is there a site where I can buy the game?
March 9th, 2011 at 8:53 am
Will i am playing braid via steam and wine on linux. my fist question is how to force a certain resolution i tried -w -width … that all did not work.
The other is: I have payed once for the game on steam – Will the linux version be available for steam users? the galcon fusion people offered a key on steam so that the game could be downloaded on their page using the key.
March 30th, 2011 at 10:35 pm
Where to buy the Linux version?
Can I use my Windows license?
April 5th, 2011 at 1:41 am
Hi,
the Humble indie bundle has finished. So right now, where can I buy the Linux version? I think at this moment, nowhere?
April 6th, 2011 at 4:40 am
Thank you really much for porting this to Linux!
April 9th, 2011 at 1:04 pm
Jonathan, we want to play the Linux version of Braid, and we are willing to pay for it. But since the bundle finished, it is not available anywhere. This situation does not have any sense.
April 9th, 2011 at 2:03 pm
Sadly i must second Wouters question. The Humble Bundle is “closed”, what ever that might mean. And sadly i get absolutely horrible FPS under Wine so how do i get Linux native Braid now?
Seems like a great game though… if i could just get it to run smooth…
April 9th, 2011 at 6:40 pm
Hey guys, we will have a public release for Linux available probably at some point this year, but we are waiting on something else to happen to make that work well. More news as it happens.
April 16th, 2011 at 2:56 pm
Maybe you should try distribution in Ubuntu App Store. Canonical need games, you need money, that must be a success.
April 19th, 2011 at 11:43 am
Jonathan, thanks so much for the update!!
What sort of timeframe is “some point” or the “something else”?
Is it within the coming weeks? Around E3 (i.e., waiting months)? During Q3-4 (i.e., waiting until our brains rot out and a single huge, sad, tear falls from our collective eyes…)?
As far as I’m concerned, it’s been 10 days since the above, which is clearly a point later in the year, and I’m sure many somethings have happened, so I’m ready to go today!!
April 22nd, 2011 at 1:22 pm
Thank you (and Ryan) for the Linux version of Braid! I got it in the HIB2 sale and have been enjoying it on a machine with an i965 (alas a i945 machine is too weak to handle the shaders).
May 3rd, 2011 at 6:57 am
Ubuntu App Store = instant sales to a huge community
May 22nd, 2011 at 5:41 am
Is there any plan for iPad version?
May 28th, 2011 at 5:13 am
There should be a mailing list informing interested people about the release of the linux version…
June 6th, 2011 at 4:09 pm
No plans for an iPad version; I don’t think Braid is an appropriate game for those controls.

Where can I buy Linux version?
July 4th, 2011 at 5:45 am
Hi,
I’m curious to buy this game since I’ve read many good reviews about it.
I just would like to know, if I buy it and install it on my desktop,
will I be able to download it as well on my other 2 laptops? Or I’ll have to pay
for each installations?
July 6th, 2011 at 2:35 pm
@Luca – we utilize no DRM, both in the HIB2 and in the Ubuntu Software Center release.
August 16th, 2011 at 9:52 am
Is there a demo of this game which i can give to my friends? Preferably linux
September 27th, 2011 at 4:36 pm
OMG! There’s a Linux version of Braid? This game is awesome. Oh well there go my days off
October 19th, 2011 at 2:09 pm
ok
November 15th, 2012 at 7:05 am
I’ve bought the humble bundle every time and I’m a FULL TIME GNU/Linux user. Thanks very much for porting your game to GNU/Linux!
Here’s a new twist: I have Steam for Linux (native) installed on my computer and I’ve activated my Braid steam key on there… Any chance you’ll be putting the Linux version of Braid into the Steam for Linux category any time soon?
Cheers and Thanks for your efforts!
January 28th, 2013 at 9:12 am
We want to do it at some point, but right now I am just too busy on the new game.
