Braid Review Round-up for August 8th, 2008.

Defunct Games: 96%. “It’s one of the most compelling, intelligent and exciting games I’ve played in a long, long time.”

UGO: A. “Perhaps one of the most immaculately conceived and executed puzzle games the medium has yet seen.”

Gamervision: 10/10 (BUY IT). “[Braid] does things with gaming that are usually reserved for novels and films, while also adding elements that would be impossible in any other form. It’s is a game that makes you think about your own life as much as it does about gaming.”

Megatonik: 5/5. “I’m still bewildered at how something can be so simple and yet so complex simultaneously. This is the most important game of the year.”

Mansized: 5/5. “…astonishingly stylish hand drawn visuals, a beautiful musical score and numerous references to some of your most loved gaming classics…”

JoystickDivision.com: 5/5. “The final piece falls into place, and everything coalesces in your mind at once. Like the puzzles that were once mystifying, you suddenly get it…”
(Thanks to Gary Hodges, for pointing this one out.)

  1. This is so great. I think it is really good that a brilliant game like this receive this much praise. Good job!

And while I am at it, I am going to praise you and ask for something πŸ˜›

I downloaded this game just because it seemed interesting. The artwork was brilliant, the music so good me and my girlfriend are probably going to buy all the CDs you listed in the Braid Soundtrack blogpost. And the gameplay is brilliant. But what has left a lasting impression on me is the story, and how everything fits together. Now, I am not going to pretend I understood everything. But what I did understand, and the fact that everything is still lingering in my head, refusing to let go… that makes this one of the best games ever. Seriously. I hope you have shown other people that these kind of games should be made. We have to few of those. So thank you. Thank you for making this.

And then I am going to shamelessly ask for some good screens of Tim and other artwork. I want to make some signatures and banners out of it that I can use on various pages. Mostly because I love the artwork, and I can put quotes from the game in them, but that way I can also tell people about the game. Interesting banners with a link to your site and such. I am not saying I ask for this to help you, that would be a lie. But I can do that at the same time.
I might be able to find this myself somewhere, but I have looked, and I am amazed how little I can find about this game around the web. It’s a shame really.

  2. I can truly understand all the praise. Braid is one of the most fascinating and amazing games I’ve played in a long, long time.

But unlike JoystickDivision.com I can’t say that all the pieces fell into place at once. It’s been more like an onion experience to me; layer after layer after layer. Maybe I will have the all at once feeling later on. Oh well πŸ™‚

  3. Congrats Jonathan! Personally, I *never* buy anything over eight hundred points on live. I like to wait until prices drop, and then I pounce. This time, of all people, my wife was like, “you should get this”. And she does not like video games. We both played the demo together, enjoying the puzzles. (To date, she has only played rock band and zuma, although she hated the latter).

I loved the way the game started, with the minimalist tutorial, and we both enjoyed the story blurbs.

You just set the bar for xbox live arcade games. Great work!

  4. Hey Jonathan, I’m Coop from Gamervision (the one that reviewed the Braid). I just wanted to thank you for the experience, and let you know that on top of the “buy it,” we also gave it a 10/10.

Fun occurrence: my “anti-spam word:” was CASTLE.

  5. I’ve just reached World 1 but before I begin I wanted to add my thanks for creating a real gem.

I never had any problem paying a bit more for a game this good (although MS points ARE a terrible idea). I just hope you’ll use the profits to bring us another one.

  6. I played this on a friends xbox last night and I was immediately hooked.

I am really hoping the PC version can run on my mac at some point or there is a mac port.

Thank you for bringing culture back to gaming.

  7. Such a huge amount of praise, well deserved. I quite like the fact that i knew almost nothing about this game until i tried the demo out of curiosity. When i got to the end of the demo there was no hesitation, i just threw my points at the Xbox and carried right on. I ended up staying up all night playing, and finally finishing it at about 8:30. Knackered but happy, i then promptly fell asleep.

I’ve been playing games since i was about 7, when i went round my friends house and saw him playing his NES on some crappy black and white TV. Whilst i mostly enjoy the typically popular games, its not very often something comes along that makes me sit up and take notice, and remind me why exactly i got into video games in the first place. Its easy to get jaded and cynical with sequel after sequel, but its a relief to know that i can still be surprised and thrilled by something a little leftfield that seemingly came out of nowhere.

  8. from playing the demo u earn these reviews!!!!!!i wish u the best of luck on your future products.keep up the good work!!1

  9. Wonderful game, Jonathan. I think it is a treat that we are able to experience such an imaginative and fascinating game. I was playing Sonic the Hedgehog 2 yesterday and was saddened to discover I could not manipulate time. Excellent work.
