New Braid screenshots.
I’m enjoying how well the game is going lately, so I thought I’d post some new screenshots to close out 2007.
Here’s a shot of the title screen. It’s been improved since last time; its full coolness, however, is only revealed when you walk through it and get all the nice parallax.
Here’s what the story screens look like now:
Here’s a level well-remembered by those who have played it:
Leaping into a pit:
Being chased by… enemies:
Each level has a title now, along with an icon to help you remember it. (These icons are what you see on the doors in the story screen shown above). The title and icon are presented when you enter a level; then they fade out and gameplay begins.
The demo is level-limited; you can play for as long as you want, but can only get to a certain portion of the game world. When reaching the ends of important areas, you’re given the choice to upgrade to the full version, or continue with the demo:

Subtle changes have occurred!
I like the addition of level names. It does a little to pull the world together, thematically.

The new sprites look nice.

When you said level-limited, (before reading the rest of the paragraph) I thought you meant that you would be able to choose 1 level or at least a set number of levels before you would be ‘kicked out’ of the demo.
Then I was thinking it might be a good way to handle it because of the whole “player choosing his own path” style of progress I’d like to see more in games.
But the way it’s done by you is probably a more representative demo than my idea.

I never realized how pretty Braid was until now.

The text looks great. You wouldn’t mind sharing your final approach to text rendering?
I like the art style of the backgrounds as well.

Having a player-selectable set of levels for a demo would be an interesting idea but I don’t think it would work very well for Braid. The thing about Braid is that the first several levels are deliberately set up to communicate the gameplay in a steady fashion… if I just let the player pick something arbitrary to play, they would be diving in without the necessary information.
Thanks for the positive comments, guys… we are working hard to finish it!

wow. The game looks amazing, the graphics are just incredible. And the storyline looked rather nice, it kind of reminds me of a stab at the old video game idea of saving the princess.
Oh yeah, and I found it kind of neat how the enemie’s eyes follow you when you jump over them
Definitely gonna cross my fingers and hope for a computer release!

These look just lovely. I’m really looking forward to seeing the demo up on the marketplace.

A month ago when I was looking at screens I was worried the characters would look like they were just cut out and pasted onto the backgrounds. Consider those worries a thing of the past. This looks completely fantastic. Great job all around. I can’t wait for it to come out!

Very pretty!
Except for that last screen: do yourself a favour and ask somebody who knows about typography to fix that for you.
Is there any animation in all that painterly brushwork?

I just want to echo the comments on the imagery … very original, creative and intriguing. I am totally new to this site. How can I get a Demo? I get the demo discs from XBOX-360 Mag … is it coming out on that forum? I don’t often keep up with all the demos that come to me. Has it come out already? Also, one last question from an inexperienced gamer … the game style this falls under … advanced puzzle type … is this the same genre, say, “Tomb Raider” would fall into, or is that an naive (read: “ignorant”) comparison. I for one appreciate a good “shoot ‘em up” but enjoy an intellectual challenge included in the experience.

[I responded to the demo part privately].
Braid isn’t so much a game like Tomb Raider. That’s mainly an action game, where the puzzles aren’t too hard to figure out, and you just pull the right switches or whatever.
The puzzles in Braid are not quite like any other game’s, but the puzzles are the main focus. There is a little bit of action, but most of the time you are figuring out how to get specific objects, where those puzzles are supposed to be legitimately challenging or interesting. (In other words, it involves actually figuring something out or realizing something interesting, instead of just being a sequence of things you can do without thinking).
I am not really coming up with a good analogy. Old-time platformer games once in a while had puzzles like this; Braid is like a platformer consisting of all that kind of puzzle, and none of the other stuff.

It looks good, this is my first look, I will play the demo and I want to buy it!
